M.Y., a man arrested after a major traffic crash in Lefkoşa (Nicosia), appeared in court today. The crash occurred around 5:20 a.m. on April 19 on Şehit Mustafa Ruso Street. M.Y., driving a car with license plate KP 100, lost control on the two-lane road and slammed into parked vehicles at Özkan Oto Galeri, a local car dealership. Five cars and a metal pole were badly damaged, with total losses estimated at 1 million Turkish Lira (TL).

Tests revealed M.Y. had 92 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood—nearly double the legal limit of 50 mg. Prosecutors stressed that his drunk driving voids any insurance coverage for the damages, meaning he must pay personally.

The court ordered M.Y. to pay 80,000 TL in cash bail and provide two guarantors (people who promise to cover fines if he fails to appear in court). Each guarantor must sign a bond worth 400,000 TL. The case highlights the severe consequences of drunk driving.
